Pokot Outreach Ministry, Kenya

For more than 20 years, Pokot Outreach Ministry (POM) has been meeting the needs of people in Pokot, Kenya. Under the direction of Julius Murgor and his wife Rachel, this ministry has grown reaching more and more people each year. There are estimated to be more than 1 million Pokot people and they live in some of the harshest conditions imaginable. Through the ministry of POM, there is an increased hope among the people as they learn about the love of Christ, and are shown that kind of love in tangible ways.

Sharing the Gospel is at the heart of everything that POM does.  Driven by that desire, there is a strong focus on the training up of indigenous leaders and pastors so that they will be equipped to establish new churches.  These churches are often simple evangelistic services held under trees in the bush.  The pastors are passionate about their work and many times lead several churches in an area, traveling between villages to spread the message of hope.  As the church continues to grow and spread, some of these leaders have felt called to other locations and have now planted churches in the neighboring countries of Uganda and South Sudan.

children60 Orphan Care

Many children in Pokot are orphaned or cannot be properly cared for by their families.  POM operates three Children’s Homes which care for more than 800 children.  These children are provided with food, clothing, shelter, education, and most importantly, they are taught about the love of Jesus.

water60 Water

Our partnership with Pokot Outreach Ministries has made the importance of water very real to us.  When people are given access to clean water, communities form and lives are changed.  Many times, the people view the water as a gift from God, which makes these areas ripe to hear the Gospel. Harvesters has supplied Pokot Outreach Ministries with water well drilling equipment and together we are drilling  wells and building mission stations near them.  A mission station generally houses a local church and medical clinic and is an area where communities are started and centered around clean water and the Gospel.

education60 Education

Although primary education is free, it is not always easily accessible in Pokot.  The children that live at Kodich, Kauriong, and Chemolingot Children’s Homes are ensured to receive an education.  In addition, many children are sponsored further and are able to complete secondary school and sometimes even a University level education through POM.

women60 Women

Lack of clean water and modern day infrastructures, constant famines and infertile land make life very difficult, especially for the women who are primarily responsible for the home, family, and income.  We have realized the need for ministry to the women of Pokot and have begun to offer programming specifically for them.  Prayer partner programs and Bible studies, along with training about important topics such as FGM (female genitalia mutilation), health, hygiene, and sanitation are now taking place.  When the women feel cared for by the church and accept Christ, they can then begin to model His love in their own lives for their husbands and children.

medicine60 Medicine

Pokot Outreach Ministries currently operates a clinic in Kapenguria where people have access to affordable, quality medical care. The clinic staff also take regularly scheduled trips to the bush to provide basic healthcare services to people that aren’t able to make the trip to the clinic.  In addition to meeting peoples basic needs, the staff is often able to share the gospel with those that they are serving.
